Alice Pauline Laver, 76, of Newton died of congestive heart failure Tuesday, April 1, in Riverview, Fla.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Heights Alliance Educational Center, 1000 E. 12th St. S., in Newton with the Rev. Steve Pankuk, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, and the Rev. Danny Hodges, assistant pastor of Community Heights Alliance Church, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or the Alafia River RV Resort in Riverview, Fla.

The daughter of Edward K. and Erna (Christian) Mettler, she was born March 16, 1927, in Davison County, S.D. She was a senior high school graduate and on Aug. 29, 1943, she married Alfred Harold Laver in Unionville, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed working outside, mowing, gardening and working in the community, playing bingo, going to Prairie Meadows and singing in her church in Florida. She was voted Strawberry Queen. She was a resident of Newton for 53 years.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Kathryn Laver of Newton; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Pat Gaer of Harlan; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and Robert Thomason of Monroe and Susan Mettler of Newton; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ella Schmidt of El Segundo, Calif., Dorothy Weidiemen of Manson and Helen Overton of Des Moines; three brothers, Bob Mettler of Colfax, Maynard Mettler of Newton and Walt Mettler of Des Moines; two step-sisters, Mary Lou Egger of Fort Dodge, and Kathy Salt of Palmyra; two step-brothers, Vernon Egger of Moore, Okla., and Gene Mettler of Des Moines; and her step-mother, Irene Milburn of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant sister, Wilma, and a sister, Ruth Filson.
