Mrs. Nathaniel R. Barnes, 79, who took ill with influenza last week, suffered a heart attack Saturday and died at the Skiff Memorial hospital Wednesday morning at 3:50 o’clock. She was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning.
Funeral services were conducted at the Murdoch Funeral home Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. H. L. Kinser. Burial was in the Newton Union cemetery.
Viola Braley was born in Kellogg, Feb. 14, 1861, and had spent all her life in Jasper county. She was united in marriage to Nathaniel R. Barnes on April 1, 1884, and for a time they lived on a farm near Kellogg and then moved to Kellogg and then to Newton 32 years ago. Her husband is a former bailiff of court, deputy sheriff, constable and also was on the Newton night police force for a number of years.
Three daughters were born to this union, one, Myrtle, died Sept. 28, 1925.
Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Dunton of Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. Jack Ferrell of Craig, Mont., and a granddaughter, Mrs. Donald Wright of Frannie, Wyo. Mrs. Ferrell and Mrs. Wright are to arrive in Newton Friday.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Dora Raymond of Altoona and Mrs. C. L. Brook of Blakesburg, Ia., and three brothers, Otis and Bill of Kellogg and Nate who is in the West.
She was a member of the Christian church.
