August 28, 1951 - August 4, 2023

Richard Allen "Homer" Simpson, age 71 of Monroe, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 12:30 pm at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Monroe Fire Department. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

The son of Cecil and Cora (Huke) Simpson, Homer was born on August 28, 1951. On January 25, 1991, he was united in marriage to Judith Hardy. Homer served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He worked as a welder by trade and most recently worked at Hewitts in Monroe. He moved to Monroe in 1994. Homer was an outdoorsy kind of guy. He enjoyed fishing near box cars, tending to his garden or tinkering with old cars in his shop. Most of his time was spent with one of the several dogs he and Judy had. Homer was a member of the Monroe American Legion and was active in several veterans' causes. He also enjoyed playing checker with Judy, usually getting beat.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Judy; children, Matt Martin, Amanda Simpson, and Tara Haag; grandchildren, Hailea, Avrionna, Clayton, Cora, Cruz, Jacob, Nicole and Katie; great grandchildren, Kace and Beckham and his brothers, Bill (Lynette) Simpson and Cliff Simpson as well as many other family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Gary Simpson; a sister, Deanna Dawson and a stepson, Terence.
