Gerald Edward Edge, 72, of 3737 N. 39th Ave. E. died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey, associate pastor of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or the Jasper County Historical Society.

The son of Everett Edward Edge and Clara Viola (Bunse) Edge, he was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1952.

In February 1956, he married Beverly Langmaid. He later married Edna M. Ellenwood-Day on Dec. 28, 1978, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Mr. Edge served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a corporal from Dec. 9, 1953, to Dec. 9, 1955. Following his honorable discharge, he farmed and sold Murphy Feed. He worked in implement sales and worked for Newton Implement for 30 years, B&N Implement and Colfax Tractor. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of Wittemberg Church in rural Newton, a member of National Grange, National Horse Council, Oak Ridge Grange, American Legion Post 111, Mid-Iowa Driving Association.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; two sons, Dennis Edward (Pauline) Edge and Douglas Eugene (Lori) Edge, all of Newton; a daughter, Diane Thatcher of Ankeny, formerly of Baxter; a step-son Paul Alan Day and his friend Caroline of Springfield, Mo.; two step-daughters, Sandra (Monty) Keller of Spencer and Kathy Ann (Kenneth) Stratton of Metamora, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carrol (Donna Jo) Edge of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
