J. O. Pflaum Died in Colfax Sunday Morning
John Oliver Pflaum, 94, a longtime resident of this city, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. L. Aikin in Colfax early Sunday morning.
Mr. Pflaum was well known as a blacksmith in this city for a number of years. He was born in a dugout home near Brooklyn, Iowa, November 3, 1865 and as a boy lived on farms near Brooklyn and Malvern. He spent some time on a homestead in Kansas but came to Colfax in his early teens. He learned the blacksmithing trade from M. D. Morrison and followed this occupation nearly 70 years.
Mr. Pflaum married Anna Reynolds Sept. 6, 1889. His wife preceded him in death on May 7, 1907. To this union were born two daughters and one son, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Leah L. Aikin of this city, Grace O. Mosley of Mesa, Arizona and Loren O. Pflaum of Long Beach, California. Four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of friends made during his long residence in this community also mourn his passing.
Mr. Pflaum was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge more than 70 years and for the past forty-five years has made his home with his daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Aikin.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 o’clock Wednesday morning, September 7th at the Methodist church in this city with Rev. E. Harold Jackson, pastor, officiating.
Music was furnished by Miss Mabie Kaldenberg and Mrs. LaVerne Woods with Mrs. Frank B. Evans, organist.
Bearers were Richard Evans, Chris Jensen, Paul Jones, Frank Morgan, Alex Rose and Gail Tilton.
Flower committee – Mrs. Nathan Pierce, Mrs. Ralph Cummings.
Burial was in McKeever cemetery north of Colfax.
