Donald E. Knight, 77, of Newton died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. David Smiley officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Baptist Church or Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund.

The son of Merrill M. Knight and Jocelyn V. VandenBerge, he was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1947. On July 22, 1949, he married Carolyn Dixon in Newton. He worked for the Maytag Company for 37 years and retired as an area supervisor in 1984.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school. He also was a member of Maytag Management Club, four antique car clubs, Jasper County Courthouse Christmas Lighting Committee and served in the Iowa National Guard for nine years. He was a Newton Cardinal football fan and an Iowa Hawkeye football fan. He enjoyed vacationing with his children and their families.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Steve (Diane) Knight of Newton; two daughters, Jolinda (Marlin) Keller and Julie (Jay) Leanhart, all of Newton; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Knight.
