Elayne L. Haparanta, 80, of Newton died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at her home.

Funeral services were held today at the Educational Center of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey officiating. Burial was at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton handled arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Carol O. and Dora (Larson) Pearson, she was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Thief River Falls, Minn.

On Nov. 13, 1943, she married Arne W. Haparanta in St. Hilare, Minn. She worked at Maid Rite for 17 years and retired in 1982.

She was an active member of Community Heights Alliance Church, where she had been church organist. She also was a member of the Primetime Ministry at the church. For 25 years, she enjoyed spending her summers in Rush Lake, Minn., camping and fishing at Sucher's Resort.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Dean Haparanta of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
