Robert "Bob" L. Butler, 79, of Newton died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at USA Healthcare — Newton.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter with the Rev. Rollin Watters officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Historical Society or Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ.

The son of Wayne and Izora (Jontz) Butler, he was born April 25, 1926, in rural Baxter. He attended country school and graduated from Baxter High School in 1944.

He lived in rural Baxter and rural Newton since 1946. He was a farmer and was a Jasper County Supervisor from 1982 to 1990. The courthouse was refurbished during his term of office.

He was a member of Izaak Walton League, lifetime member of Congregational United Church of Christ, Knoxville Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Jasper County Historical Society and Jasper County Farm Bureau. He traveled all 50 states and oversees and enjoyed sprint car racing, University of Iowa football and birthday dances.

Survivors include special friends, Norma Allspach and Chad, Morgan and Blake Robson, all of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
