Polly Emery was born at Sheffield, Ohio, August 6, 1856. She moved to Wisconsin in childhood and a few years later moved to Jasper county, Iowa, which has since been her home. She died after weeks of suffering at the home of her daughter Blanche, Mrs. Tom Jeffries, near Baxter, Iowa.
She was united in marriage Sept. 15, 1875 to John Stier, to this union seven children were born – Lee and Mayme died in infancy and the five were left to comfort their mother in later years and mourn their loss. They are Mrs. Tom Jeffries and Amos Stier of Baxter, Mrs. Robert Densmore of Oakland, Cal., Albert Stier and Mrs. Ilan Neal of Mingo. One sister, Mrs. Miles Hay, of Rhodes, one brother, George Emory of Menlo, nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also mourn her death. Mrs. Stier united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of thirty years and was ever faithful to her trust. Mr. Stier died in December 1896 and she toiled on bravely to keep the home fires burning, doing cheerfully and lovingly for her own and others.
Funeral services were held at the Mingo Methodist Episcopal church Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Keister, the pastor, spoke fitting words of comfort. A double quartette sang favorite hymns and Mrs. Irene Fisk sang a beautiful solo. Mrs. W. F. Hayes presided at the piano. The floral offerings were beautiful. Burial was made at the Ashton cemetery.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were her nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Allen, Mrs. James Strukler, Mrs. Nina Baker and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Dodd, of Rhodes; Fred Borts and family of Baxter; Mrs. Eleanor Doerfler and daughter of Des Moines, Stewart and Carrol Pitcock; Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Borts; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Courtney of Boone, a brother-in-law, Dick Stier, of Oakland, California and many from Baxter and Collins..
