March 10, 1923 - December 16, 2022

Leona Wilma (Van Zee) Wing of Mitchellville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 16, 2022, at the age of 99. The daughter of Frederik and Engeltji (De Kock) Van Zee. She was born March 10, 1923, near Pella, IA.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Gale Wing on June 22, 1944, in Pella and spent the next 65 years with him until his death in 2010. Gale and Leona lived for many years near Runnells farming, gardening, and raising their family of four children. Her children and grandchildren share many fond memories of those years on the farm.

They were members of the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church. They moved to Pella in 1985 where they managed Fair Haven West for several years and became members of the Covenant Reformed Church. They moved to Prairie City in 2002. Leona moved to Mitchellville in 2010.

Leona loved nature, her gardens, flowers, and trees. You could always find her outside. She shared her plants with others, and she planted hundreds of trees in her lifetime. Leona also loved to sew. She made clothes for her children, bridesmaids dresses for their weddings and many clothes and items for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After moving to Mitchellville, she sewed with the Ladies of Your Brother’s Keeper for several years and enjoyed the Community Senior Lunches. She loved to read and read several books a week.

Left to honor her memory are 3 of her children: Dennis (Marcia) Wing of Pleasant Hill, Joan (Max) Allsup of Mitchellville, and Greg (Deb) Wing of Runnells. Eight grandchildren: Anna (Matt) Pilcher, Darin (Shelley) Wing, Jennifer (Mike) Galloway, Jodie (Sam) Hoerr, Mandy (Steve) Zook, Nathan (Melissa) Allsup, Rick (Ashley) Wing and Victoria (Matt) Christian. Her memory is also honored by many great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents; Fredrik and Engeltji; her husband, Gale, and daughter, Sheila, and her seven siblings: John, Jennie, Anna, Julia, Henrietta, Freda, and Alice.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 23, 2022, at 10:30 am at the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church. Burial will take place at McKeever Cemetery north of Colfax. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated to charities in Leona’s memory. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhoomes.com
