Leah V. Peery Sparks, 87, of 709 10th Ave. in Sully died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with Pastor John Epperson of the Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the funeral home. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell and may be left at the funeral home.

Leah V. Peery was born Oct. 11, 1914, in rural Galesburg, Iowa, to George W. and Laura Zickle Peery. She graduated from Newton High School.

She married C. Max Sparks on Sept. 24, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a homemaker and had been a secretary at the Sully Co-op.

She was a past member of Lynnville Eastern Star, Harley Owners Group, Ladies of Harley, American Motorcycle Association and Gold Wing Road Riders Association. She had been to both coasts and points in between on her son's motorcycle.

She is survived by a son, Craig Sparks of Sully; a brother and sister-in law, Carroll and Pat Peery of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max, in 1976, and a sister, Lorene De Kock.
