SULLY - Bryce O. Macy, 83, of Sully, died Thursday, July 4, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

His funeral service was held today, July 8, in the chapel of Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Roger Punt officiating. Burial: Sully Cemetery, Sully, with military honors by Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella. Memorials: National World War II Memorial Fund.

Bryce Ogden Macy was born Jan. 21, 1919, in Oskaloosa to Carrol and Vivian Hull Macy. He grew up in the Lynnville area and graduated from Sully High School in Sully. He then attended Grinnell College in Grinnell.

On June 18, 1941, he married Helen Marie Vanderpol. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942, and served with the 89th Infantry Division and was honorably discharged in 1945. He received a service stripe, two overseas service bars, a Good Conduct Medal, an American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.

After his discharged he and Helen lived in Sully. He worked for his father, Carrol, at Macy Stockyards. In 1954 he and his brother-in-law, Albert Renaud, formed a division of the business known as M & R Trucking. Bryce remained active in the stockyards as a hog buyer until retiring at age 65. He then began golfing full-time. Helen died Feb. 4, 2002.

Bryce was a charter member of the Sully Lions Club and the Jasper County Historical Society. He was a lifelong member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer fireman in Sully, a director for the Sully Telephone Association and First State Bank in Lynnville, and was chair of the board for Iowa Realty Trust. He attended First Reformed Church in Sully.

He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law: Curtis Ogden and Linda Macy of Cleveland, Tenn., Mark B. Macy of Sun Prairie Wis., and William Noel Macy of St. Paul, Minn.; two granddaughters: Brooke Macy and Stephanie Morrow; a great-grandson, Alexander Macy; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Gweneth Sorlien of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Eloise and Karl Pedersen of San Jose, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Vanderpol of Hilltop Manor North in Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
