NEWTON - Lela P. Lester, 97, of Newton, died Saturday, Aug. 10, at Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.

Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial: Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Visiting hours begin 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will have a coffee time at the funeral home immediately following burial. Memorials: Willowbrook Adult Day Care Center, in care of the Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1743 S. 8th Ave., Newton, IA 50208.

Lela P. Lester was born March 30, 1905, in Barnes City to Hiram and Elmina Walker Morrow. She graduated from Barnes City High School.

She married Edward B. Lester on Jan. 26, 1924, in Barnes City. She had lived in Newton since 1930. She was a homemaker, and a bailiff at the Jasper County Courthouse 1978-1988. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a grandson and his wife, Edward and Norma Lester of Van Meter; two great-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward B., in 1978; a son, Leon; a daughter, Judith Garner; and two brothers: Gifford and Sammie Morrow.
