Keith D. Layton, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Oct. 27, at Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa.

His funeral service will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Michael Crouch officiating. Burial: Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Visiting hours will be Tuesday at the funeral chapel, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials: First Christian Church Building Fund.

Keith D. Layton was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Judd, N.D., to Wallace William and Mattie Hazel Rusk Layton.

On July 17, 1937, he married Irene Finch in Newton. They lived in Newton until moving to Oskaloosa; they opened Layton's Music Store on Nov. 1, 1946, and operated the store for 30 years until selling the business to Bill Mattingly. Keith was well-known for his Christmas decorations at his home on the north edge of Oskaloosa. He was an avid bird-watcher and bird bander for many years.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa Ornithologists Union, and the Inland Bird Banding Association.

He and his wife sold tickets for the horse show arena at the Iowa State Fair for 13 years. He also enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law: Beryl and Patricia Layton of Cedar Rapids; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, on March 29, 1998; his parents; a brother, Kenneth; and a sister, Glyndin McGriff.
