PRAIRIE CITY - Christina De Vries, 83, of Prairie City, died Monday, Nov. 25, at Pella Regional Health Center.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Prairie City Christian Reformed Church, Pastor Adrian Eising officiating. Burial: Waveland Cemetery, Prairie City. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City, with family present 6-8 p.m. Memorials have been designated for Prairie City Christian Reformed Church.

Christina De Vries was born June 12, 1919, in Jasper County near Fairmount to Rodger and Gertrude Bogaards Boertje. She graduated from East Ryan Country School south of Prairie City. On Dec. 11, 1940, she married Harold De Vries at her parents' home south of Prairie City. She lived west of Prairie City until moving into town in 1978.

She was a homemaker, and had been a cook at Prairie City Schools, and a housekeeper at Cardinal Inn in Prairie City. She enjoyed crocheting and won ribbons at the Iowa State Fair for her skill. She enjoyed doing the Jumble word puzzle, helping with SHARE and nursery for Coffee Break. She was a member of Prairie City Christian Reformed Church.

She is survived by four children and spouses: Ruth Arlene and Leonard De Vries of Pella, John Harold and Phyllis De Vries of Prairie City, Margaret Faye and Leon Vander Weerdt of Sully, and Melvin Dale and Kaylene De Vries of Prairie City; her grandchildren: Ryan De Vries of Pella, Laremy De Vries of Sioux Center, Patricia (and Craig) Harrison of Oelwein, Jeffrey (and Kristin) De Vries of Ames, Julie De Vries of Prairie City, Faye (and Eric) Brand of Sully Gwyn and Kyra Vander Weerdt of Sully, Jason, Kimberly and kaitlyn De Vries of Prairie City; two great-grandchildren: Caleb and Lauren Harrison of Oelwein; a sister, Wilma Ferguson of Kennesaw, Ga.; a brother and sister-in-law: Raymond and Thelma Boertje of Prairie City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Charles, in infancy; a granddaughter, Jayna Nicole De Vries, in infancy; a sister, Dena Van Peursem; and a grandson, Layton De Vries.

Funeral services for Christina De Vries, 83, of Prairie City were held November 29 at Prairie City Christian Reformed Church in Prairie City.

Interment was at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Casket bearers were "grandsons" Craig Harrison, Jeffrey De Vries, Ryan De Vries, Eric Brand, Laremy De Vries, and Jason De Vries.

The daughter of Rodger and Gertrude Bogaards Boertje, she was born June 12, 1919, in Jasper County near Fairmount, Iowa. Christina graduated from East Ryan Country School, south of Prairie City. On December 11, 1940 she was united in marriage to Harold De Vries at the home of the bride's parents, south of Prairie City. She had lived west of Prairie City before moving to town in 1978. She was a homemaker and had been a cook at Prairie City Schools and a housekeeper at Cardinal Inn in Prairie City.

She enjoyed crocheting which won ribbons at the Iowa State Fair, doing the daily Jumble word puzzle, and helping with SHARE and nursery for Coffee Break.

She was a faithful member of Prairie City Christian Reformed Church for which memorials have been designated. She passed away November 25, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

She is survived by her four children: Ruth Arlene and her husband, Leonard De Vries of Pella; John Harold and his wife, Phyllis of Prairie City; Margaret Faye and her husband, Leon Vander Weerdt of Sully; and Melvin Dale and his wife Kaylene of Prairie City; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister: Wilma Ferguson of Kennesaw, Ga.; and a brother: Raymond Boertje and his wife, Thelma of Prairie City; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Charles, in infancy; a granddaughter, Jayna Nicole De Vries, in infancy; a sister, Dena Van Peursem in 1993; and a grandson, Layton De Vries in 2000.

Arrangements were handled by Walters-Coburn Funeral Homes in Prairie City.
