Harvey E. Van Kooten, 55, of rural Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa.

His funeral service will be 5:30 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Bruce Thompson officiating. A second service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in Denver, Colo., with burial to follow at Hampden Memorial Garden in Denver. Visiting hours are open today at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with family present 6-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Visiting hours continue from 2 p.m. until service time Friday at Bethel Baptist Church. Memorials: Bethel Baptist Youth Ministries Fund.

Harvey E. Van Kooten was born Oct. 6, 1945, in Newton to Gerrit and Durky Lanser Van Kooten.

On June 19, 1964, he married Gloria Terpstra in Leighton.

They moved to Colorado, and he operated a heating and air conditioning business. They moved back to the Oskaloosa area in 1975. He was a contractor in the construction industry. He was active in the design and construction of the new Bethel Baptist building. He was active with church youth groups and went on several wilderness trips with young church members.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Oskaloosa; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Loren and Stacie Van Kooten of University Park, and Tony Van Kooten of Oskaloosa; two daughters and sons-in-law: Jodi and Larry Kotlarz of Oskaloosa and Patricia and James Myers of Sigourney; 12 grandchildren; his mother, Durky Van Kooten of Denver, Colo.; five brothers and sisters-in-law: Dwayne and Elsie Van Kooten and Ronald and Ruth Van Kooten, all of Denver, Colo., Roger and Eileen Van Kooten of Pella, Gary and Joyce Van Kooten and Wesley and Junella Van Kooten, all of Leighton; and three sisters and brothers-in-law: Lois and Ralph Hoksbergen of Oskaloosa, Cleora and Francis DeJong of Leighton, and Janice and Kenneth Wieland of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Tammy Van Kooten; and a son-in-law, Daniel Keith.
