Everett C. "Blackie" or "Pinky" Blackwood, 84, of Newton died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at his home in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Newton Public Library, Hospice of Jasper County or Progress Industries and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Roy and Ida Maria (Saunders) Blackwood, he was born April 4, 1921, in Killduff. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1938.

On March 8, 1957, he married Caroline F. Large in Des Moines. He farmed, worked in the factory for the Maytag Company and retired in 1986.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, reading and inventing.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark (Diane) Blackwood of Davenport and Brian Blackwood of Newton; a daughter, Joan (Jerry) Blackwood-Davis of North Vernon, Ind.; four grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Wylie of Indianapolis, Ind.; and his mother-in-law, Lucille E. O'Roake.

He was preceded in death by his parents
