Alfred L. "Al" Blackett, 76, of Newton died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Omaha, Neb., at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to Friends of the Animals or to RSVP may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Alfred L. Blackett Sr. and Violet (Timblin) Arb, he was born July 21, 1929, in Omaha, Neb. He graduated from North High School in Omaha, Neb., in 1946, and earned a bachelor of science degree at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. He played football for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

On June 9, 1950, he married June Larson in Lincoln, Neb. He worked as a methods engineer for the Maytag Company and retied in 1991.

Mr. Blackett was a member of the Newton Elks Lodge, Friends of the Animals of Jasper County, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Maytag Management Club, RSVP volunteer, Road to Recovery driver for the American Cancer Society, Newton Little League/Babe Ruth coach and a Thomas Jefferson Elementary School volunteer.

His is survived by two sons, Thomas E. Blackett of West Des Moines and Dave (Sarah) Blackett of Newton; a daughter, Karen L. (Greg) Trost of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a cousin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Eugene Arb; stepmother, Katherine Arb; and his wife.
