Gary Desmond Bestell, 53, of 709 E. 20th St. S. died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made in his name or to Izaak Walton League, American Cancer Society or the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center.

The son of Desmond Verdale Bestell and Patricia Maxine (Broesch) Bestell, he was born June 25, 1952, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1971.

On Sept. 16, 1972, he married Allison K. Wendel in Newton. He worked for the Maytag Company in Newton for 27 years and was a senior research technician. He was an avid outsdoorsman and loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle and hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Brad R. Bestell of Newton; a daughter, Amy I. Bestell of Newton; one granddaughter; his mother, also of Newton; three brothers, John Robert (Peggy) Bestell of Kellogg, Billy Joe (Teri) Bestell of Newton and Jody Ray (Traci) Bestell of Baxter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
