NEWTON — Mary L. Benac, 73, of Newton, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 814 First Ave. E. in Newton, with the Rev. Martin Hoesch officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends immediately following the burial with a lunch at the church.

Memorials to the Grace Lutheran Church, the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center or the American Cancer Society may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or at the church the morning of the service.

The daugther of John Abram and Mae (Vangilder) Bakalar, she was born Nov. 20, 1931 in Monroe County.

She married Marion R. Benac on Oct. 29, 1949 in Newton. She lived in Newton since 1947. She worked in housekeeping at Skiff Medical Center for 20 years and retired in 1994. Prior to working at Skiff, she worked as a baker's helper at Mendell's Bakery in Newton.

She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and belonged to the Ladies Aide group.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Mary Jane (David) Chaplin of Magnolia, Texas, Cindy L. (Chuck) Koopman and Loretta (Craig) Tool, all of Newton, and Tina R. (Randy) Frein of Mason City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 14 brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and a step-brother.
