Phillip Schmitt, Pioneer Farmer Died Monday
Funeral Services Held Wednesday Afternoon From the Home
Phillip Schmitt, 84, pioneer farmer of Washington township, passed away at his home Monday, Dec. 29, following a general decline in health.
Mr. Schmitt was one of the truly pioneer residents of the community, having lived in Washington township for over 60 years an always considered a fine high type citizen.
He was born in Lee county, coming to Jasper county as a young man and followed the vocation of farming.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Orie Schmitt, on the farm, George of Blackberry, Minn., Oscar of Prairie City, Mrs. Tom Jones of Des Moines, Libbie at home and one sister, Mrs. Anna Anderson. His wife died in 1923 and two sons, Oscar and Everett preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the home with the Rev. Albert Van Der Ploeg officiating.
Burial was in the McKeever cemetery in the family lot.
