John S. Howe was born March 14, 1879, and was married to Anna Pearson Sept. 20, 1899. To them was born a daughter, Berniece Oct. 11, 1900. When five years of age, with his parents he moved to Nebraska, where he remained until fifteen, since which time his home has been in Colfax, aside from having resided in Des Moines and Webster City for a few months, in the last of which he was residing when his sickness came on last April, when he removed to this place again to be near his mother and brothers. He was a highly respected young man with a great number of friends who will extend their sympathy to the bereaved wife, mother and other relatives.
Source: Colfax newspaper; death date August 3, 1902, (this was found in an Obituary Scrapbook at the Colfax, Iowa Library)The death of John S. Howe, eldest son of Mrs. Jessie Howe, at his mother’s home in the west part of this city, was among the sad occurrences of the week. Mr. Howe was only a little more than 23 years of age, a young man of integrity and bright promise. Life with all its endearments and fascinations was only beginning for him, making death seem a cruel enemy. He pleaded for life, for health to banish the terrible foe – consumption – which had fastened upon him the cruel hand of destruction, only a few months ago.
John S. Howe was born in Des Moines, March 14, 1879, died August 3, 1902. He married Miss Anna Pierson in September, 1899. Most of the past eight years were spent with his mother in Colfax. He was living at Webster City when he was first taken sick, but upon the entreaty of his mother, who visited him, he came to Colfax the last of April and remained until his death, his family and friends doing all that loving hears could do to aid and comfort him.
Besides his young wife and little daughter, 20 months old, he leaves a mother, sister and two brothers. The funeral services were conducted from the residence Tuesday at 2 p.m. by the Odd Fellows fraternity. Rev. Stahl preached the funeral sermon, and the interment was at McKeever’s cemetery.
