Funeral Services For George Barker Held Sunday
Native Of England, had Worked As Coal Miner Here For Years
Funeral services for George Barker, 77, veteran coal miner of his city, were held Sunday afternoon from the Cutter-Hartnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. T. W. Stark of Newton officiating.
Mr. Barker was a native of England, but had spent many years in Colfax, working in the coal mines. He was highly respected by all who knew him.
George Barker, son of Maria and Noah Barker, was born in Derbyshire, England, Jan. 15, 1866 and passed away March 5, 1943, at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 18 days.
He was united in marriage to Fanny Tann Nov. 25, 1885. To this union were born four children, Charles Harold of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Frances South of West Des Moines, Mrs. Cassandra Offenhauser of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Clarice Gould, also of West Des Moines, Iowa, and nine grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife and family, one brother, Noah of Colfax and two sisters, Jane and Mary Hannah of England.
He first came to America in 1884, settling in Angus, Iowa, later returning to England where he remained until 1909, when he came again to America, making his home in Seevers, Iowa. In 1919 he moved to Colfax where he resided until his death. He was raised in the church of England. He was a good father and honesty was his creed. He confessed his faith in the Lord Jesus and passed away in peace to be with his maker.
“Sleep on Beloved and take thy rest, Lay down they weary head upon my breast. We love thee well, But Jesus loved thee best. Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.”
Music was furnished for the service by Mrs. Earl Plummer and Mrs. George Rinker.
Pallbearers were Leo Schermerhorn, Clyde Brown, Preston Brown, Floyd Thompson, Lewis Edwards and Tom White.
Burial was in the McKeever cemetery.
