Leslie Hodgson Dies After Long Illness
Funeral Services Held Saturday For Fourteen Year Old Boy
The death of Leslie Hodgson, a boy of fourteen years, came as a sad blow to his parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and school mates, following an illness of many weeks.
Leslie Clair Hodgson was born in Colfax, Iowa, August 12, 1916, to the happy parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Hodgson, and one brother and six sisters. Time went by and he started in the first grade of our public schools. He was ever cheerful and a real livewire with the other children. He also attended the Christian Sunday School.
Leslie started school this fall in the 7A grade. So much of the time he complained of his head hurting. No relief seemed available here so on October 29th he was taken to the hospital at Iowa City. The doctors found a tumor under his brain in such a position that they could not remove it, and sent him back home. Man longed to help but could do nothing. He received tender care in his home, many friends stopped to give a word of cheer, and he looked forward to the next promised visit of his minister. His faith in Jesus helped to make his suffering easier.
On January 15, 1931, his pain was unbearable and feeling he could not get well here, he asked his mother to pray and he prayed, “Jesus take me to your home.” His voice was stronger than it had been for several days. His prayer was soon answered, falling asleep at noon, and at one o’clock he started his journey to a better world, where God will give him a new body full of strength, and free from pain. His presence here gave joy to many for but a little while, 14 years, 5 months, 3 days.
Preceding him are a sister, age three months, and a brother, age three years.
He continues to live in the memory and hearts of his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Hodgson, one brother, Edward, who works in Newton; six sisters, Mrs. Bertha Hutson of Boone, Mrs. Nina Haning of Colfax, Mrs. Mable Bolio and Mrs. Myrtle Hadsel, both of Des Moines, Evelyn and Elsie at home; and a number of friends who knew him.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Christian Church with Rev. J. W. Taenzler officiating. Leland Nichols, Arnold Davidson, Darrell Neiman, Jack Sharples, Norman Elleworth and Dale Fry were the pall bearers.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Geo. Robinson, Mrs. Earl Plummer, Chester Binkerd and Gomer Williams, who sang two selections, and by Robert Parks, Robert Nichols and Norman Hanna, who sang “Jesus Loves Me.”
Seventh grade students with their instructors attended the service in a body.
Burial was made at McKeever cemetery.
