Samuel Jackson was born in Erie county, Penn., August 28, 1845. Died at his home south of Collins June 27, 1912. His parents moved to Indiana when he was a babe and came to Iowa locating near Mitchellville when he was 14 years old. Later they moved to Greencastle.
January 27, 1867, he was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Connor, of this vicinity. Since the death of his wife December 11, 1899, he has lived with a niece, Mrs. Joshua Vasey, and it was at her home he was tenderly cared for during the 7 months’ illness with Bright’s disease and passed on. No children were born to this union but several nieces and nephews found a home with them.
Funeral services were held at Ashton Saturday 2 p.m., Rev. Williams of Mingo preached, a chorus sang and a large crowed attended. The flowers were many and beautiful – even for June. Interment was beside his wife in the pretty little cemetery he had loved and cared for so long.
Those from a distance were his niece, Mrs. James Stock and husband of Colfax, his brother’s wife, Mrs. Belle Jackson, Amy and Chas of Des Moines; his brother, Joshua, of Savannah, Mo. and his brother, Daniel, of Wray, Colorado, could not come.
