Faye Smith Former Colfax Resident, Dies
Mrs. Merle E. (Faye) Smith, 43, formerly of 500 S. 3rd Ave. W., died Monday at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Newton.
The Rev. William E. Sexton, pastor of the church, conducted the services.
Survivors are two sons, Stephen C. of Newton and Merle E. Jr., of Newton; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thomas of Colfax; two brothers, Richard Thomas of Searsboro and James Thomas of Oakland; and five sisters, Mrs. Prentice (Helen) Russell of Reasnor and Mrs. Paul (Lucille) Yoakum, Mrs. Ronald (Maxine) Carroll, Mrs. Clarence (Dorothy) Riley and Mrs. Rudy (June) Nikolish, all of Colfax.
She was preceded in death by her husband Nov. 18, 1968.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton and had served as a Red Cross Gray Lady at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville.
She had been an employee of the Newton Community School District for a number of years.
The daughter of Harry and Hazel Lavalleur Thomas, she was born Aug. 2, 1929 at Colfax and attended Colfax schools and the Americana Beauty School in Des Moines.
She was married to Merle E. Smith Mar. 26, 1950 in Newton.
