Clarence C. Harp, 71, Former Mayor of Newton, Dies Today
Clarence C. Harp, 71, of 604 E. 3rd St. S., a former mayor of Newton and former owner and operator of the Newton Refrigerated Locker Co., died early today at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson-Reese Chapel.
The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Elks National Foundation or the First Lutheran Church will be accepted. Memorials may be left at the Johnson-Reese Funeral Chapel or at the Elks Lodge.
Friends may call at the Johnson-Reese Chapel after 10 a.m. Friday until time of services.
Survivors are his wife, Lorena; a daughter, Joan Harp of Pacifica, Calif.; and a brother, Royce L. Harp of West Frankfurt, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack, of Dallas, Tex.
Mr. Harp was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and was a lifetime member of the BPOE Elks Lodge No. 1270 in Newton of which he was a past exalted ruler.
Mr. Harp served as mayor of Newton from 1951 to 1961 and owner-operator of the Newton Refrigerated Locker Co. for 20 years until retiring in 1961.
The son of Isaac and Angie Harp, he was born May 6, 1905 in Otley and was a 1924 graduate of Newton Community High School. He moved to Newton with his family when he was 6 years old.
He was married to Lorena Wehrman Sept. 23, 1925 at the First Lutheran Church in Newton.
