Virginia Cobbs Dies Today; Rites Thursday
Mrs. Philip H. (Virginia) Cobbs, 89, of Embassy Manor Care Center, a resident of Newton since 1920, died this morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Gregory Caldwell, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Clara Helen) Beitel of Downey, Calif., and Mrs. Lloyd (Lois Jane) Clevenger of Monroe; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Harris of Earling and Lowell Harris of Newton; and two sisters, Mrs. J. H. (Jessie) Duncan of Albert Lea, Minn., and Mrs. G. R. (Florence) Burns of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jan. 11, 1970, a son, Russell, in March 1945, a grandson and a great-grandson.
Mrs. Cobbs was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Royal Neighbors of America, NN Club, Jasper County Gray Ladies and the Newton Chapter No. 100 of the Order of Eastern Star.
The daughter of M. B. and Lavina Cox Harris, she was born Jan. 16, 1887 in Moravia.
She was married to Philip H. Cobbs Nov. 25, 1915 in Moravia.
