John P. Miller Dies Monday; Rites Thursday
John Peter Miller, 87, of the Midtown Apartments, died Monday evening at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Lenox Cemetery in Lenox.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Survivors are his wife, Maima; a son, Garold Miller of St. Joseph, Mo.; two grandsons, Richard Miller of St. Joseph, Mo., and Craig Miller of Cerritos, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, a brother and two sisters living in Denmark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harold, 8; an infant daughter; and several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Miller, a retired farmer, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Jasper County Farm Bureau.
The son of Jens and Kristiana Lauristsen Miller, he was born Feb. 16, 1888 in Jutland, Denmark, and attended Danish schools.
He came to the United States in the spring of 1909, lived in Grand Island, Neb. for a short time, farmed in the Lenox community prior to moving to a farm south of Newton in 1937, and moved to Newton upon his retirement 20 years ago.
He was married to Maima S. Brown Dec. 18, 1814 at Hutchinson, Kan.
