E. G. Stephenson Dies Saturday; Services Tuesday
E. G. Stephenson, 73, of 728 S. 3rd Ave. E., a resident of Newton since 1928, died Saturday morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Congregational united Church of Christ.
The Rev. Phillip Friedeman, pastor of the church, assisted by Captain Jerald Forney of the Salvation Army, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral home through Monday evening and at the church after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Survivors are his wife, Mary; two sons, Robert of Oklahoma City, Okla. and John of New Ulm, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. R. H. (Mary Ellen) McBride of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, including Mrs. H. E. (Susan) Hege of Sumpter, S.C., Mrs. Paul D. (Jane) Harner of Chaska, Minn., John and Jim, both of Newton, who were raised in their grandparents home; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth of Long Beach, Calif., Maynard of Manchester and Eugene of Santa Ana, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Margaret) Quirin of Dallas, Ore.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Robert.
Mr. Stephenson was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, past president of the Newton Kiwanis Club, life member of the Salvation Army board and past president of the Maytag Management Club.
Mr. Stephenson was a retired Maytag Co. engineer.
The son of Olden and Edna Birmingham Stephenson, he was born Oct. 24, 1902 in Livermore and attended Algona schools and Grinnell College.
He was married to Mary Shand Aug. 18, 1924 at Crary, N.D.
