‘Heavy’ Amsden Dies Thursday; Rites Saturday
John I. “Heavy” Amsden, 72, of 207 E. 15th Ave. W., a resident of Newton for approximately 50 years, died Thursday morning at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Veterans Section of Newton Union Cemetery.
All Master Masons are asked to be at the Masonic Temple by 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today.
Survivors are a brother, Fred Amsden of Long Beach, Calif., a sister, Nellie Amsden of Atlantic; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Amsden, a member of the Lovilia Lodge No. 124 AF and AM, served in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II.
Mr. Amsden, a retired employe of the Maytag Co., also worked on construction.
The son of Jesse and Ida May Thompson Amsden, he was born Oct. 7, 1903 in Rantoul, Ill.
