Doyle Arkema, 23, Killed In Farm Accident Monday
Doyle Verdell Arkema, 23, of Rt. 1, Kellogg, died Monday afternoon as the result of an accident at his farm in Buena Vista Township, approximately seven miles southeast of Newton.
Jasper County Deputy Sheriff Dick Dunsbergen said he received a call to the farm at about 6:30 p.m. and found Arkema in the barn where he had apparently been crushed between a loader bucket and a wooden fence.
Dr. M. R. Moles, acting coroner, pronounced Arkema dead at the scene and said he (Arkema) appeared to have died instantly.
Dunsbergen said in his report that Arkema had been operating a small front end loader in the barn and apparently stopped the machine, got off with the engine running, and bumped the bucket lever causing the bucket to come down on him.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sully Christian Reformed Church.
The Rev. Fred Howten, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Christian Opportunity Center in Pella will be accepted.
Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella is handling arrangements.
Survivors are his wife, LaVonne; a son, Jeremy Todd, 1 ½; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dorman Arkema of Lynnville; two brothers, Duane and Michael Arkema, both of Lynnville; a sister, Mrs. Carroll (Marla) Fopma of Sully; and three grandparents, Mrs. Oney Arkema of Sully, Walter Newendorp of Leighton and Garrit Jansen of Lynnville.
The son of Dorman A. and Beulah Newendorp Arkema, he was born Dec. 13, 1952 in Oskaloosa, attended Sully Christian School and was a 1972 graduate of Pella Christian High School.
He was married to LaVonne Elaine Jansen April 5, 1974 in Sully.
