James R. Adams Dies Wednesday; Services Friday
James Richard Adams, 51, of 705 W. 9th St. N., a resident of Newton for 25 years, died Wednesday afternoon at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today. The casket will not be opened at any time.
Memorial contributions to the Heart Fund will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Merilyn; two daughters, Mrs. Dave (Mary) Summy of Alleman and Mrs. Gary (Connie) Grimes of Newton; four granddaughters; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Adams of Knoxville; two brothers, William L. Adams of Newton and Don Adams of Denver, Colo.; and three sisters, Mrs. Chester (Bette) Blackman of Knoxville, Mrs. T. L. (Jeanne) Wilson of Jacksonville, Ill.; and Mrs. Mike (Peg) Fillman of Charleston, S. C.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Richard II.
Mr. Adams, a Navy veteran of World War II, was a member of the Maytag 25 Year club and the Newton Elks BPOE No. 1270.
He had been employed at the Maytag Co. for 25 years as an engineer.
The son of Clifford B. and Algia Toom Adams, he was born Aug. 12, 1924 in Crookston, Minn., and was a graduate of Knoxville High School and a 1950 graduate of Central College in Pella.
He was married to Merilyn Wahlin Nov. 8, 1946 in New Sharon.
