Dr. Maynard L. Jones Dies Friday, January 18
Dr. Maynard L. Jones, 57, well known Colfax physician, died Friday, January 18 at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Survivors are his wife, Betty Lou, two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Craig R. and Kendra Garrett, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Thomas and Marna Fauvelle, Vancouver, Washington; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Debbie Jones of Prairie City and Todd Jones, a student at William Penn College in Oskaloosa; his mother Zita Jones, of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Megan and Evan Garrett, Gabriel Fauvelle and Daniele Jones; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dr. Arthur and Shirley Cloud of Ames, and Robert and Helen Junod of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The son of Kenneth and Zita Shutts Jones, he was born May 22, 1922 at Ottumwa, Iowa. He was a 1940 graduate of East High School in Des Moines and also graduated from Drake University. He was united in marriage to Betty Lou Barkus November 24, 1946 in Des Moines. While serving as a navigator in the Army Air Corps during World War II, his plane was shot down over Cologne, Germany. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Iowa.
Dr. Jones served on the Colfax Board of Education for 18 years; he was a member of the American Legion, Jasper County and Iowa Medical Societies and A.M.A. A member of the United Methodist Church he was named an honorary Alumni of Colfax High School, was chosen the Outstanding Citizen by the Colfax Kiwanis Club this past year, and had been chosen to receive the Team Doctor Award at the State Wrestling Tournament this April.
Funeral services were held Monday at the United Methodist Church, with burial in the Colfax Cemetery. Rev. Jim Pemble conducted the services, and graveside military rites were conducted by the Jones-Willis Post 175, American Legion.
Soloist was Edward J. Gannon; organist was Mrs. Frank B. Evans. Casket bearers were Stanley Arnold, Frank Forsythe, Arthur Haas, Francis Millburn, L. D. Norris, Eben Van Dusseldorp, Melvin Van Dusseldorp and George Weirick.
Memorial contributions may be made at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.
