Robert Johnson dies; once owned funeral homes
Robert S. Johnson, 85, of Newton died of cancer Monday at Skiff Medical Center there. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Newton, with burial at Newton Union Cemetery there.
Mr. Johnson was born in Munterville and had lived in the Ottumwa area as a youth before moving to Newton in 1947. He had owned and operated Johnson Funeral Home in Newton from 1947 until selling the business in 1975, which then became Reese Funeral Home. He was a broker salesman and operator of Iowa Farm and Home Real Estate Co. before retiring. He was a member of Emerson Hough Chapter of Izaak Walton League, Masonic Lodge 59, Newton Noon Kiwanis Club and Iowa funeral Directors Association. He was a past member of Newton City Council and a 22-year member of the Newton Planning and Zoning Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; two sons, R. Steven of Newton and Christopher of Des Moines; three daughters, Marsha Scherubel of St. Joseph, Mo., Sue Mahan of Two Rivers, Wis., and Barbara Bewyer of Iowa City; a sister, Lela Swedberg of Duluth, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the church. Visitation will continue from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to his church. Reece Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
