Mrs. Bertha Bauer Died Suddenly Thursday Night
Mrs. Bertha Bauer, 66, a resident of the Poweshiek township community, died suddenly Thursday night as the result of a heart attack. Mrs. Bauer had been visited early that night by her son, Gerald, who had stopped at the home to leave her a duck which he had shot while hunting. Mrs. Bauer was apparently in the process of cleaning the bird when the heart attack took place, her body being discovered Friday morning by her son Gerald when he returned to the home.
Bertha Hunter Bauer, the daughter of Olive and Edgar Hunter, was born in Poweshiek township, Jasper County, Iowa on Sept. 15, 1889 and was a lifetime resident of this community. She attended schools and grew to womanhood in this county and on January 26, 1910 was united in marriage to James Leonard Bauer in Des Moines. To this union two children were born, both of whom survive. They are Mrs. Ruth Rinaldo of Elmhurst, Ill., and Gerald of Colfax. Two sisters, Mrs. Susie Main and Mrs. Snowden Atwood, both of Colfax and one brother, Ralph Hunter, Sr. of Ira also mourn her passing, along with a host of other relatives and friends made throughout the years as a resident of Poweshiek township. Mr. Bauer preceded her in death on March 13, 1937.
Mrs. Bauer was an active member of the Poweshiek Twp. Woman’s club and of the Presbyterian Women’s Assn., and was a kind and loving mother, devoting her life to family and friends and will be missed greatly by her many associates who came to know and respect her during her years as a resident of the community.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Frank Hladky, pastor of the church officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. S.E. Tennant, organist.
Bearers were John Cross, Vessie Rhone, Reed Pease, Clare Pease, Wayne Wheatcraft and Darwin Clippinger.
Mrs. Vessie Rhone, Mrs. Alpha Cross and Mrs. John Cross were in charge of the flowers.
Burial was in the McKeever cemetery north of Colfax.
