Duncan Darwin Adams, son of Elias and Rebecca Adams, was born April 10, 1859, at the Adams homestead north of Colfax and passed away at his home in Mingo at 3:00 a.m., March 31, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 20 days. Mr. Adams was one of a family of ten sisters and brothers, all of whom preceded him in death. His entire life was spent in Poweshiek township and he received his early education at Prairie school.
On March 20, 1887, he was united in marriage with Alice Westfall. To this union were born two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Adams Pease, who died in Eureka, Calif., May 13, 1939. His survivors are his widow, a son-in-law, John M. Pease, a grandson, Joe Pease and a great-grandson, Victor Pease, all of Eureka, Calif., and a granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Pease Cabral of Merced, Calif.
The first twenty-three years of their married life, Mr. and Mrs. Adams spent near the place of his birth where he took an active interest in all affairs of the community, an interest which deepened with the years.
In 1910 they moved to the town of Mingo which has been their home and where their work in church and community affairs has continued, Mr. and Mrs. Adams having been members of the Methodist church for more than forty years and where he served on the church board as long as he was able. He has filled all the offices of the town with ability and the entire community has respected his judgment in all matters pertaining to the public welfare.
Since his activities have been limited by failing health, he has found his greatest happiness and deep satisfaction to his home and friends and the never-failing companionship of his wife.
