Esther Smith, 78, Dies; Rites Tuesday
Mrs. Esther Smith, 78, Newton resident who lived at 2202 South Fifth Avenue East, died at Skiff hospital Saturday morning.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral chapel with the Rev. Allan K. Williams of the First Methodist church officiating. Burial will be at Union Chapel cemetery.
Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Harry Wehrman, Newton, Mrs. John Breyer and Mrs. G. I. Reynolds, both of Seattle, Wash.; one son, Hollis B. Smith, Campbell, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Emma Eckles, Newton; two brothers, W. M. Campbell, Nevada, and L. J. Campbell, Independence; and 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Born to Frank and Mary Campbell in Story county April 15, 1878, she married Stacy B. Smith at Des Moines on Feb. 28, 1900. Mr. Smith died in 1953.
Mrs. Smith spent her early life near Collins and also lived with her parents in Nebraska and Missouri for a time. The trip to Nebraska and Missouri was made in covered wagon. She later returned to Iowa and spent most of her life at Ames.
