Leonard Kirchner, 98, of Baxter, one of Jasper County’s oldest residents, died this morning at the Gardner Custodial Home at Colfax.
Funeral services for Mr. Kirchner, a resident of the nursing home since 1960 and a resident of Jasper County since 1885, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Boyd-Nickell Funeral Home at Baxter.
The Rev. T. A. Thomson, minister of the Baxter Congregational (United Church of Christ), will conduct the services. Burial will be in Union Chapel Cemetery near Ira.
Survivors are two cousins, Fred Esch of Baxter and Carl Esch of Eagle Point, Ore., and several nieces and nephews in Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
The son of Christopher and Barbara Kirschner, he was born March 26, 1868 in Wertheim, Germany, and was educated in German schools.
He came to the United States in 1885, settling in Colfax, and later residing with the John Esch family northwest of Ira.
He farmed west of Baxter from 1900 until 1943 when he retired and moved to Baxter.
