Carl Franklin Johnson
Feb 5, 1946 – Nov 28, 2021

Carl “Sonny” Johnson, 75, died Sunday, November 28th, 2021 from complications of COPD. Carl is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret Purdue and her 3 children; son, Ron Johnson and his wife, Patty; daughter, Jaime Hendricks and her husband, Dayton; along with 5 grandchildren, Jesse, Ana-Michele, Aiden, Max, and Addison; sister, Lucille Schwarz of Newton Iowa; niece, Lyndi Yardley of Newton, Iowa, and former wife, Michele Johnson; along with countless golf “cronies” from the various golf courses he spent many hours at. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harley Johnson, Dorothy Leatherman, Robert Leatherman; and nephew, Scott Schwarz.

Carl was born on a kitchen table in Vilonia, Arkansas on February 5th, 1946 to parents Harley and Dorothy Johnson. He graduated from Newton High School in Newton, Iowa in 1964 where he was an all-star basketball player, helping his team to two state championships, only losing 1 game in 2 years. It was there that he was coined the nickname “Sonny”, which carried on through his entire life. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Reserves for 6 months before continuing his education at Bueno Vista College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Las Vegas where he taught students with disabilities. Carl started his long banking career at Dial Financial, worked at Norwest Financial, and retired from Wells Fargo.

Carl could often be found hunting pheasant in the flatlands of Iowa, fishing for that perfect trout in Lake Mead, or golfing in Sun City. He was a jack of all trades, and could fix anything, sometimes requiring multiple trips to Home Depot to complete the project. His homemade ribs and BBQ sauce were like none other. His pride and joy were his kids and grandkids. His last outing was watching his grandson, Max, play baseball and take home the championship, something he said “was a true honor to watch.”

A funeral is scheduled for Friday, December 17th at 2:00 at Palm Mortuary: 7400 W Cheyenne Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89129 with a reception to follow at Magoos Bar and Grill: 7360 West Cheyenne. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carl’s life. The family would like to thank Nathan Adelson Hospice, Comfort Keepers, and his favorite caretaker, Dolores, who took such great care of him.
