Youth Dies When Car Overturns; Rites Wednesday
Charles Richard Plumb, 17, of Newton as killed Saturday evening when his car overturned on a gravel road about 5 miles southwest of Newton.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Plumb of 1024 East 10th St. North. Mrs. Plumb is reported to be in California where she is visiting another son.
According to Sheriff Ray Gaylor the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. The car apparently hit the west bank of the Metz road right near the Sugar Grove cemetery. The car, Gaylor reported, turned end-over-end, throwing the boy out and then rolling over him. The car continued to turn over for another 96 feet and then came to rest in an upright position.
Funeral services for the youth, who was born in Baxter August 5, 1941, to Van and Thelma Plumb, will be held at the Johnson funeral home Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Bell officiating. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery.
County Coroner M. R. Moles said Plumb died instantly of a compound skull fracture caused by the accident.
Besides the parents, survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Wilda Steel of Knoxville and Mrs. Cleo Hoover of Muscatine; and five brothers, Bill, Larry, Doug and James, all of Newton and Robert, a corporal in the Marine Corps, at Santa Ana, Calif.
