Funeral services were held July 16 at the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints in Runnells for John B. Hawkins of Monroe. Henry Castings officiated at the service with Elvin Ver Dught assisting. Interment was in the Vandalia cemetery at Vandalia.
Special music was provided by a vocal duet of Mrs. Stewart Hayes and Mrs. Wilbur McGee, with Mrs. Dan Bartelma as accompanist.
Bearers were Dean Hawkins, Junior Hawkins, Layton Miller, Lavern Miller, Verl Ver Dught and Marvin Ver Huel.
Sam Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wilson had charge of flowers. Walters Funeral Home in Prairie City had charge of arrangements.
John Berten Hawkins was born to Mary and James Hawkins in Christian County, Greenwood Township in Palmer, Ill. on July 13, 1880. He died on July 14, 1957 at the age of 77 years at Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton after suffering from a heart ailment.
He was united in marriage to Cora Day Garrison on April 19, 1901. To this union seven children were born, four boys and three girls. He was preceded in death by his wife fifteen years ago, also his three sisters, one brother and several half sisters and brothers.
He leaves to mourn his passing seven children, Earl of Monroe, Burl of Newton, Mae Miller of Runnells, Pearl Ver Dught of Monroe, Ruby Ver Huel, Jason, and Glen, all of Monroe; 29 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a kind, devoted and loving father and friend to everyone who knew him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He lived around Runnells for a period of years where he was a farmer before retiring and living around and in Monroe.
He was baptized by Elder Clyde McDonald into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on May 25, 1954, and attended church at Dunreath where he was a faithful member.
