Last Rites For Mrs. F. E. Cooper Aged 85 Years
Catherine Adalaide Showalter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Showalter, was born in Delphi, Ind., Aug. 1, 1851, and departed this life at her home at Vandalia, Iowa, Oct. 3, 1936, at the advanced age of eighty-five years, two months and two days.
When but a child, she with her parents came to Iowa, settling near Salem, where she lived until the time of her marriage to F. E. Cooper of that place on Oct. 15, 1873, and they would have been married sixty-three years the 15th of this month. To this union seven children were born, the oldest daughter Eva having died in early childhood, and another daughter Myrtle having preceded her on Feb. 24, 1917.
Following their marriage, they went to near Aurora, Nebr., where they took a homestead on which they resided three years, then returned to Iowa where she spent the remainder of her life in the vicinity and at Vandalia, the latter place being her home for the past fifty-nine years.
When but a girl, thirteen years of age, the deceased accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and united with the Presbyterian church, and since then has lived a consecrate Christian.
She had been in failing health for the past several years, and on Sunday prior to her departure, suffered a paralytic stroke which resulted in her death.
Mrs. Cooper exceeded by more than fifteen years her allotted three score and ten, and contrary to the statement of the Psalmist, her declining years were made beautiful by a sweet and gracious spirit that endeared her to her friends to whom she was an inspiration, a lovely example of one who has “grown old gracefully.” In the home she was the recipient of the tenderest care from all the family, especially from her daughter, Katie, who has been a great comfort to her in her declining years. She was a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, a faithful and true friend.
Besides her aged companion she leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Harry of Des Moines, Clifford and James C. both of Runnells, two daughters, Mrs. John Roberts of Coalville, Utah, and Miss Katie of Vandalia, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three half-brothers, John and Joseph Furnoy of Prairie City and James Furnoy of Long Beach, Calif., besides a host of other relatives and friends.
(poem not transcribed)
Funeral services were held at the Vandalia community church Monday afternoon, Oct. 5, at 2:00 o’clock. Services were conducted by Rev. David Jopling of Runnells. Interment at Vandalia cemetery.
