Frank Brunner Died on Friday; Buried Sunday
John Francis Brunner, son of Adam and Eliza Brunner, was born near Prairie City, Iowa, May 10, 1872, and passed away from this life on June 15, 1934, at the age of sixty-two years, one month and five days.
At the early age of fourteen years he was bereaved by the death of his mother, but the father survived until 1918.
On December 28, 1898, he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Anderson of Vandalia. One child, a son, was born to this union on April 10, 1902, and died in infancy. The father never ceased to mourn the loss of the child and always enjoyed the company of children.
Mr. and Mrs. Brunner began their married life in Prairie City where he engaged in trucking, hauling and horse breeding, but spent eleven years farming north of Colfax. On April 6, 1930, while employed with the evening chores, he was stricken with the illness which eventually claimed his life. On account of his affliction he was compelled to leave the farm and moved to the present residence in Prairie City from which he passed away on Friday morning. He had partially recovered when in September, 1932; he suffered an attack of the flu with a nervous breakdown. At that time he applied for admittance to the State University hospital in Iowa City but did not enter the hospital until February of this year. There he was found to have heart trouble with high blood pressure and diabetes from which he could gain little relief. Two weeks ago he became seriously ill and never recovered.
He was a patient sufferer and normally was of a happy and jovial disposition. His friends, to whom he was familiarly known as “Frank,” enjoyed coming to visit him and young people felt that he was one of them.
He was a member of the Prairie City I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 144 and the Excelsior Rebekah Lodge No. 470.
Left to mourn him are his faithful companion who has cared for him through all his illness; one sister, Mrs. F. W. Price of Des Moines; two brothers, Valentine and Chas. E., both of Prairie City; one aunt, Mrs. Val Herway of Liberty Center, Iowa; one uncle, J. P. Brunner of Newton; one niece and two nephews, Mrs. Ellidge Carter, Shelbyville, Ind., Cecil and Loren Brunner, Prairie City.
Funeral services were held from the Vandalia church Sunday afternoon, June 17, at two o’clock with Rev. J. H. Findley of the Prairie City Methodist church in charge. Mrs. Marie Danley and Miss Edith Peery sang “Lead Me Gently Home” and “Back From the Long Ago”, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Mildred Warner. Pallbearers were Fred Veere, Cecil Brunner, Wilbur Brayton, Foster Farrar, Harold Anderson and Roy Anderson.
