Pella – Simon Van Der Zyl, 87, of Pella, a former resident of the Sully community, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Third Reformed Church in Pella.
Dr. Delmar Thiesse, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sully Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home after noon Friday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Christian Opportunity Center in Pella will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Jennie; three brothers, Walter of Newton and Floyd and Cornie, both of Pella; two aunts; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosa, Aug. 19, 1955, his mother in 1955, his father in 1958 and two brothers, Ralph in 1989 and Marion in 1990.
The son of Menze “George” and Jennie Van Der Hart Van Der Zyl, he was born Feb. 3, 1904 near Pella. Later he moved with his family to the Sully area where he attended rural schools.
He was married to Rosa Miller March 21, 1928 and the couple farmed for a number of years and Mr. Van Der Zyl was a bricklayer for seven years.
He was married to Jennie Van Hal April 10, 1956 and the couple farmed in the Sandridge area for 28 years prior to moving to Pella in 1984.
