Pocahontas – Amelia Gertrude Smith Fitzgerald, 80, of Pocahontas, a former resident of Jasper County, died Monday evening, Dec. 16, at Pocahontas Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas.
Father David Hogan will conduct services. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas.
Friends may call at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas after 2 p.m. Friday.
Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Friday with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday, both at the funeral home.
Survivors are five sons, Richard of Lowden, James and Dennis, both of Pocahontas, John of Cedar Rapids and David of Iowa City; 24 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are seven sisters, Cecelia Tomlonovic of Colfax, Kathleen Hugger of St. Louis, Mo., Teresa Hutchens of Mason City, Helen Smith and Betty Loflin, both of Denver, Colo., Jean Zielinski of Houston, Texas, and Virginia Reichert of Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold, in 1987, daughter, Joan Marie, a son, Robert Charles, and three brothers.
She was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic church, the CD of A and the Catholic Ladies Society. She enjoyed gardening, especially the growing of flowers.
The daughter of John and Anna Meimann Smith, she was born March 12, 1911 at Zearing and was graduated from Buffalo Center High School.
She was married to Harold Fitzgerald Jan. 16, 1934 at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Buffalo Center and the couple farmed in the Colfax, St. Anthony, Mingo, Kellogg, Baxter and Elkhart areas.
They retired in 1974, moving to Ankeny. They moved to Pocahontas in 1987.
Mrs. Fitzgerald moved to Pocahontas Manor in September 1990.
