Ben Harper Rites Held Nov. 4
Funeral services for Ben A. Harper, 65, a lifelong resident of Newton, were held Monday, Nov. 4, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
The Rev. Michael Orthel, pastor of United Methodist Church in Colfax, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
He died Thursday, Oct. 31, in Des Moines of heart failure.
Survivors are four sons, Robert Townsend and Chuck Cisler, both of Newton, Mike Kintz of Baxter and Ray Haney of Melbourne; two daughters, Pam Haney of Mingo and Debbie Musser of Newton; 11 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Also surviving are three brothers, Wilkerson of Albia, Lloyd Milton of Royal Oak, Mich., and Paul of Red Springs, N.C.; two sisters, Marguerite Selby of Albia and Ella Fern (Mrs. Marvin) Bensend of Atkins, and his fiancé Marian Kean of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Martha in 1983, second wife, Betty Lou, Jan. 4, 1991, five brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Harper was an Army veteran of World War II. He had been employed at the Maytag Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1982, and was employed at ServiceMaster in Newton.
The son of William and Lucinda Fay Breese Harper, he was born Jan. 30, 1926 in Albia and was educated in Albia schools.
He was married to Martha Underwood in 1946 in Pennsylvania and to Betty Lou Lamb, July 28, 1984, in Newton.
