Ben C. Cobbs Sr., 83, of 212 E. 13th St. N., a resident of Newton since 1927, died of heart failure Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, at Skiff Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newton First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. Friday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the church or to Progress Industries may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Ruth; a son, Ben C. Jr. of Slidell, La.; a daughter, Martina (Mrs. Dwain) Holmes of Newton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cobbs was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Phil and Bill, and a sister, Lucy Gushwa.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Jasper County Volunteer Program and the Camera Club.
Mr. Cobbs worked for 36 years at Newton Implement before his retirement.
The son of Isaac and Clara Garton Cobbs, he was born July 27, 1908 at Lovilia. He was a 1925 graduate of Lovilia High School and a graduate of Chillicothe Business College.
He was married to Ruth E. Martz Oct. 18, 1931 in Grinnell.
