She was the daughter of Merritt and Jeanette (De Koning) Westbrook, born in Waterloo on July 5, 1930. Charlene graduated from Monroe High School in 1948 and went on to work for Maytag Corporation in Newton. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Edwin McGregor on October 29, 1953. Even though every farmer wants boys, they produced 6 very capable and talented daughters (guess who wrote this).

She organized and planted enormous gardens each year, then taught all the daughters how to tend, harvest and preserve everything from corn to tomatoes to rhubarb. She cleverly took advantage of free child labor. She was an avid baker, making everything from memory, and her specialty was pies which disappeared at family gatherings and every church social. Hundreds of apple and cherry trees had to be climbed by her agile daughters to supply the pie baking effort. She was born gregarious and could chat with strangers and while making monster cookies with her grandchildren. Her creativity served her well when plotting elaborate treasure hunts on Easter and in designing and making quilts.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband of 67 years, Kenneth McGregor; her daughters, Janet (Kevin) Borts, Jean (Dakota Madsen) McGregor, Sharon (Dennis) Verhey, Kathy (Frank) Vander Broek and Donna (Monte) Busselman; nine grandchildren Karen (Ryan) Zicco, Laura (Eric) Harder, Matthew Verhey, Nicole (Colin) Knoll, Jessica (Jim) Patterson, Cody (Damika) Vander Broek, Emily, Max and Isaac Busselman; seven great grandchildren Kayla and Reid Zicco, Jocelyn and Colton Harder, Hannah, Holly and Harper Patterson.
Charlene was preceded by her parents, her step father, Ed Scheffers, brother, Duane Westbrook and daughter Carolyn McGregor.
