Mrs. C. O. Rider Died Sunday Afternoon
Was Pioneer Of Jasper County; Had Spent Most of Life on Farm at Ira
Mrs. C. O. Rider, of near Ira passed away Sunday afternoon, following an illness of some duration, a stroke being the immediate cause.
Mrs. Rider was one of the early pioneers of this county and had spent most of her life on the farm near Ira – the home she loved. A couple of years ago Mr. and Mrs. Rider bought a residence in Colfax and planned to move here, but Mrs. Rider could not think of leaving the old home, so they gave up the idea.
Mrs. Rider was born February 20, 1850 in Kittanning, Clarion county, Pa. She was united in marriage to C. O. Rider on January 1, 1873 at Stockton, Iowa, and to this union the following children were born: Mrs. W. S. Westbrook of Newton; Mrs. J. J. John of Burt; Miss Jennie at home; Warren Rider of Newton; Mrs. Frank Baker of Ira; Mrs. J. L. Coughlan of Mingo; Mrs. Lee Dodd of Glendale, Calif.; Mrs. Earl Moyer of Valley Junction and Mrs. Tom Wyatt of Grand Island, Nebr.
She is survived by her husband, and the nine children, besides many other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Union Chapel with Rev. Abe Kerns officiating. Interment at Union Chapel cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. C. O. Rider, who died at her home near Ira Sunday afternoon as the result of a stroke, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Union Chapel, with an old friend of the family, the Rev. A. B. Kearns of Lake City, Iowa officiating. Burial was made in the cemetery nearby.
The pallbearers were four grandsons, Harold Coughlan, Sidney John, Stanley Baker and Merritt Westbrook and two neighbor boys, Clifford Baker and Raymond Iske.
Those attending the services from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. Guy Witmer of Alden, Iowa; Mr. James H. Brown, a nephew, and wife and two children of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mrs. Ralph Echorn and Mrs. W. L. Lair, Mrs. F. K. Witmer of Grimes, and her daughter, Mrs. J. O. Gleason of Des Moines; Mrs. I. E. Allen and daughter, Emma of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Westbrook and baby, Duane, of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. John and son, Sidney, of Burt; Mr. and Mrs. Earle Moyer and Mrs. John Moyer of Valley Junction; Clark Rose and Dale John of Maxwell; Will John of Burt, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wyatt of Grand Island, Neb., and Mrs. A. B. Kearns of Lake City, Iowa
Elizabeth M. Brown, second daughter of James and Martha Simpson Brown, was born in Clarion county, Pennsylvania on Feb. 20, 1850, and died on June 9, 1929 at the age of 79 years, three months and nineteen days. She moved with her parents to Iowa near Stockton, Muscatine County in 1853, where she grew to womanhood.
On Jan. 1, 1878, she was united in marriage to C. O. Rider and with him came to Jasper county, Jan. 16, 1873 where they established their home. To this union, nine children were born, all of whom are living. These include Mrs. W. S. Westbrook of Newton, Mrs. J. J. John of Burt; Miss Jennie Rider at home, Warren R. Rider of Newton, Mrs. F. A. Fuller of Ira, Mrs. J. L. Coughlan of Mingo, Mrs. Lee Dodd of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Earle Moyer of Valley Junction and Mrs. Thomas Wyatt of Grand Island, Nebr. All of the children were present at the time her last illness, with the exception of Mrs. Dodd.
Besides her husband and nine children, she is survived by 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, N. P. Brown of Shell City, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. I. E. Allen of Geneva, Nebr., and Mrs. F. K. Witmer of Grimes and other relatives.
She was converted and joined the Methodist Church when she was 15 years of age, but later she and husband were immersed in Indian Creek two miles south of Union Chapel and united with the Christian Church in March 1877. Mrs. Rider was a member of the Newton Daily News Three Quarter Century Club.
